Treatment of the war memorial was long overdue. The different (incompatible) stone types and bronze plaques were cleaned using a range of techniques and materials. Copper-staining was removed from porous limestone beneath the brass plaques, which were removed of degraded varnish and had several layers of protective wax applied. The figurative Portland stone elements were sheltered-coated to slow down rates of deterioration. Defective pointing was removed and replaced and small areas of mortar repairs were executed.
