Holy Bible 1778
This leather bound bible had been damaged during a poor attempt at restoration by an non-conservator, before entering my studio. The text-block had been “pulled” and all the original sewing had already been removed leaving each gathering severely damaged by this process.
Whilst in my studio repairs were made to the paper using wheat starch paste and a Japanese paper.
Evidence was used to ascertain the original sewing structure and the book was re-sewn on cords at the original sewing holes.
Hand sewn head and tail bands were sewn on.
A hollow was created in Japanese tissue and aeroplane linen, over the cords to create a hollow back and a new spine created in hand toned leather. With a simple gold tooled title label added.
The original boards were conserved and reattached onto the book, with original end papers intact.
