Seal Gut Parka
Conservation of a Arctic seal gut parka for the Mayflower exhibition at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum. The parka was cleaned, reshaped and damaged areas were supported with removable fills. A lightweight mount from Fosshape™ was also produced to better support the delicate object.
Date completed : 19 December 2019 Duration : 3 Weeks
The parka is made from horizontal strips of marine mammal intestine sewn together in a horizontal pattern using tiny sinew stitches.
The conservation returned the parka to display in a physically stable condition removing surface dusts, old surface treatments and mending tears. A new light weight mount was produced which supported the delicate object while on display.
