Conservation of Burmese Buddha, 19th century wooden lacquer and polychrome sculpture
Conservation of a privately owned, previously restored, sculpture of Burmese Buddha, dated to the 19th century. A range of materials were treated, including carved hardwood, lacquer, paint, gilding, applique and glass decorative details.
The sculpture is a well-loved family heirloom. The project started by removing unsuitable previous restoration to enable structural repairs to the hands and drapery. This was followed by consolidation of lifting and flaking lacquer. Decorative applique on the head and edges of drapery, uncovering of areas overpainted during previous restoration and cleaning was carried out as the next step. Finally, selective filling, toning and retouching was done in consultation with the client.
During this project I learned about specific applique techniques, such as using coloured glass and strands imitating hair.
Collaboration with an accredited conservation technician resulted in a new display plinth being made.
