This little portrait had hung in its frame for over 200 years. The original adhesive used to back the work had darkened and distorted the ivory. As the ivory is very thin, discolouration on the reverse is often viewable on the image. The paper sealing the glass to the frame to prevent dust and debris from entering had broken, exposing the portrait to the environment.
