Conservation and restoration of Portrait of Thos. Panton, 1772, by Thomas Gainsborough
The unlined portrait was torn and very fragile. There were layers of dirt and varnish distorting the colours and picture space of the painting.
Dirt and varnish layers were removed, with dramatic effect.
The tear in the canvas was repaired, before lining with conservation adhesive onto linen, and re-using the original stretchers.
All marks, canvas stamps and inscriptions were recorded in the treatment documentation.
