Paul Ferguson ACR
Paul Ferguson MBE ACR attended art school (Luton Polytechnic, Kingston College of Art) before training as a wood carver in central London at Paul Levi’s framing studio. He established The Paul Ferguson Workshop in 1978. In 2012 the business was incorporated into Fine Wood Carving and Gilding Ltd.
Paul has employed and trained many carvers and gilders but now chooses to work alone, assembling a team of craftspeople when necessary. In 2007 Paul gained accreditation (ACR) with the Institute of Conservation. Between 1992 and 2017 he was elected annually to the office of Honorary Secretary of the Master Carvers’ Association. Between 1999 and 2001 he was also elected President, the only time in the Association’s long history (founded in 1897) that the membership has elected the two posts to the same member concurrently. Paul featured in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List being awarded an MBE for services to carving, gilding and conservation.
Possibly the most prestigious and challenging project completed to date is the carving and gilding of some of the Carlton House Trophies for the Windsor Castle Fire Restoration.
Paul undertakes extensive restoration/conservation work that entails condition reports, analysis, proposed treatments, and method statements followed by final reports including photographs of works during progress.
Contracts have been carried out for a wide variety of clients, ranging from royal palaces, stately homes, listed buildings, government buildings and public museums to architects, antique dealers, interior designers and private individuals.
