About Me
A founder director of Carvers & Gilders, I have spent over 40 years as a specialist in the conservation and restoration of fine decorative woodcarving, giltwood furniture, mirror frames, ornament, etc. I also design and make commissioned pieces in both period and contemporary styles.
I provide condition analysis reports, treatment proposals and detailed estimates. I am also called on for advice by the furniture departments of major auction houses and by private clients looking to buy at auction. I involve the younger members of staff in this, as well as coaching them in carving and gilding skills and conservation techniques, so that they become experienced in all aspects of the business.
My clients are from both the private and public sectors, including the Royal Palaces, stately homes, Christie’s, Sotheby’s, interior designers. Much of our work is on privately owned items, where discretion and anonymity are the utmost priority and therefore no detail can be given here. When necessary, the company works closely with allied trades and professions, such as cabinet makers, upholsterers and textile conservators to achieve the finished results for our clients.
I have taught the gilding module at City & Guilds of London Art School as part of the 3-year Conservation BA. I have also occasionally lectured at the Sotheby’s Institute.
We employ 4 full time assistant conservators/restorers, a part-time office manager and a part-time financial manager/company secretary.
