Following a degree in Fine Art, I was accepted onto a three year apprenticeship in Wall Paintings Conservation at Canterbury Cathedral Wall Paintings Workshop, under the direction of Wolfgang Gaertner. Here, as part of the team, I undertook in-house work on wall paintings and polychrome stone in Canterbury Cathedral. The team also worked on outside commissions including churches and Cathedrals (Portsmouth and Oxford), and Chatham Historic Dockyard.

After serving my apprenticeship I was keen to explore the wider world of conservation. I became self employed and assisted a number of conservators in the private sector working on wall paintings, paintings on canvas, paintings on wood, architectural stone, sculpture and some gilding. During that time I attended some week long courses on aspects of conservation including wall paintings and stone conservation.

For six months I had a short term contract with Historic Scotland, covering maternity leave. There I worked on wall paintings, paintings on wood and paintings on canvas.

In 2003, as my business grew, I became director of my own company; Peter Martindale Conservation. Since 2010 I have largely worked on my own account, undertaking conservation projects either on my own or with a small team (1 or 2 colleagues/assistants). The work I undertake includes the conservation of wall paintings, paintings on canvas (in my studio), stone & sculpture conservation and plaster conservation.
